Environmental care is a fundamental component of our sustainability strategy. We develop strategies that enable us to manufacture and distribute products with less environmental impact, we improve our process efficiency to reduce our use of resources, and we strive to preserve the biodiversity around us.

Reforestation programs in Irapuato and Salamanca with Reforestemos México, A.C.; the reproduction and reforestation of Picea Engelmannii, a native Mexican species of pine, in the Eastern Sierra Madre, and restoring bee populations in the Comarca Lagunera region of northern Mexico with the grass-roots organization “Alas de Vida Laguna.”

Water Conservation

(303-1, 303-3, 306-1, 306-5)

We have water consumption efficiency programs in place in our manufacturing operations that have enabled us to reduce water use per kilogram of product made by 8.5% against the base line.*

We contribute through a number of initiatives, including remediation of the upper basin of the Nazas River in the Comarca Lagunera region of northern Mexico, the Sierra de Santiago in Nuevo León, and Arteaga in Coahuila, and the preservation of the Cuatrociénegas Ecological Preserve.

For these projects, we have the oversight and approval of agencies such as:

  • The National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR).
  • The Forestry Department of the Nuevo León state university (UANL).
  • The National Natural Protected Areas Commission (CONANP).
  • The Monterrey Metropolitan Water Fund (FAMM).
  • The Nature Conservancy.
  • The Center for Research and Advanced Studies (CINVESTAV) of the National Polytechnic Institute, Irapuato Campus
  • The Biology Department of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

Energy and Emissions

Our firm commitment to the environment impels us to seek out sustainable strategies like transportation fleet maintenance programs, focused on improving fuel consumption yield and minimizing environmental impact. We upgraded our fleets:

PRIMARY FLEET

In these vehicles, we worked to reduce fuel use per unit by upgrading to newer units with more efficient motors.

0
We added 93 tractor-trucks with high-efficiency engines.

SECONDARY FLEET

We renovated 455 vehicles, 100 of which run on compressed natural gas.

0
new delivery vehicles fueled by compressed natural gas, which is less contaminating than conventional fuel.

In Central America, we renovated 28 vehicles and added 5 more to our delivery fleet.

PRE-SALE

For the pre-sale phase, we acquired 486 motorcycles that help us increase our logistical efficiency.

For the pre-sale phase, we acquired 486 motorcycles that help us increase our logistical efficiency.

As for our consumption of electrical energy, the Tizayuca plant was designed with high efficiency standards, including insulation of cold chambers, and energy management practices applied by personnel to take maximum advantage of thermal energy.

Energy consumption within the organization*

Total consumption of fuel from nonrenewable sources within the organization 180,498 GJ
Total energy consumption within the organization 917,882 GJ

Waste

(301-2, 306-2)

We have developed waste management plans to make sure we appropriately dispose of all waste,
in keeping with the law, and we also have strategies for reducing, reusing and recycling waste
throughout the organization.

Since 2015, our subsidiary Setylsa has lengthened the maintenance cycle for its diesel and LP Gas engine trucks, which reduces the generation of hazardous waste. This one measure reduced consumption of lubricants by 181,448 liters and contaminating components by 21,727 since the start of the program.

0%
of our special handling waste is recycled

The percentage of hazardous waste generated in our food factories is 0.2%. Lala has strategies for ensuring that all of this waste is used as alternative fuel by other companies.

In Central America, 70% of lubricants and 89% of batteries are sent to recycling plants.
